Programme Intended Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate the key concepts and theories in core disciplines of social science;
  • Integrate knowledge of core social science disciplines and apply them to the process of developing innovative solutions to complex social problems;
  • Engage stakeholders from different sectors in the process of performing administrative and managerial functions and tasks related to social innovation;
  • Demonstrate the intellectual abilities to design and conduct social research independently with a range of information technology applications;
  • Communicate and articulate ideas effectively with different audiences; and
  • Recognize the importance of ethical practice, social responsibility, social justice and civic awareness when acting to resolve conflicts, address problems and respond to social and environmental challenges.



Main Subject Areas


Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) in Social Innovation is a four-year programme. Students are exposed to core disciplines of social sciences and helps them acquire social research skills to investigate social issues and problems. Students’ competence in formulating ideas, creating values, performing management functions related to the practice of social innovation in public and non-profit organizations are developed.


In year one and two, students are required to study the following foundation and generic courses:

  • Introduction to Political Studies
  • Introduction to Sociology
  • Economics of Public Affairs
  • Understanding Human Needs
  • Critical Thinking
  • Creativity and Problem Solving
  • Social Research
  • Contemporary Social Issues in Hong Kong


In year three and four, students take the following core and specialized courses:

  • Foundations of Social Innovation and Social Enterprise
  • Project Planning and Implementation

  • Social Impact Assessment

  • Technology and Innovations
  • Social Innovation Internship
  • Capstone Project on Social Innovation

Career Prospects


GraduatesGraduates of the programme major are expected to be able to work for the public sector at officer grade at various Government departments and disciplinary forces as civil servants. They should also be able to work as project officers, liaison officers, community organizers, campaign officers, research officers, education officers, and fundraising officer in non-profit sector or community-based organizations, civic organizations or social enterprises. Some of them may run for political office or serve as assistants to the Legislative Councilors or District Council Members. They are competent enough to be customer service officers, event officers, social marketing officers, administrative officers or assistants in the private / business sector to promote corporate social responsibility in particular. The graduates are encouraged to set up their own social enterprises, social innovation labs or social businesses to put their knowledge into practices.
